Last year, we did not have much of a winter. There was a sad lack of snow, unusually warm weather, and people mad about having bought a lift tickets to places with no moisture. This year, it is a real Alaskan winter. Running has slowed down and become less frequent, but ice fishing and skijoring has increased.
We are not from here, but the people that are have been telling us that this is not normal weather. This article says that “Anchorage is poised to see the breaking of a weather record that has stood for more than half a century, after more than a month without significant snowfall.”
We bought skis and even got to use them once or twice. That was it. Somehow, Alyeska has gotten over 500″ of snow. The base of the resort is mostly dirt and mud though. Currently, there are many cloud free days. With higher temperatures, we are out hiking in places that we didn’t think we would be until later in the year. The lingering sunsets have been quite incredible. Even with a little Instagram editing.
The weather here has been really nice. We don’t have any snow in the mountains, but we are still enjoying the spring!
It might be weird to be thankful for the rain in Seattle, but I really love it. We just came in from throwing the ball for Lando in the new park by our house. Nobody was there and it is pouring rain. I love the sweaters, tea, cool weather, and awesome fishing that can all accompany the rain.
Jason and I hit Rattlesnake Lake on a beautiful morning to see if the new carping pole would work. This summer, it is on! Poling around mud flats while sweating and being eaten by mosquitos sounds fantastic right about now.
Maybe Macklemore is Jason!
This was my kind of day. Despite the rumors of snow, sideways rain, and lots of wind, we rove up to Black Lake and had a banner day. It was a touch cold, but we survived. We loaded the canoe and headed East.It was snowing on us, but we didn’t see anyone else and we caught lots of fish. When Lando couldn’t stop shivering, we headed in.Once we were home, we all celebrated.Lando thought it was well worth it.
